Dr. Mary LeMaître of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the University of Winnipeg is seeking Medical Cree Interpreter(s) to translate vocabulary from English to Cree for a Cree-English medical dialogues book.

Responsibilities:

The interpreter(s) will meet at the U of W Oral History Centre for one to two hours at a time to translate words/sentences from English to Swampy Cree (n dialect). The frequency and times will be agreed upon and set up by the Cree interpreter(s) and Dr. LeMaître. A recording device will be used. Dr. LeMaître will read words/sentences in English and the interpreter will translate them into Cree. Dr. LeMaître will transcribe the recordings. No transcription is required on the part of the interpreter.

The recordings obtained will be used for the purpose of translation for the book. In the event that a grant can be obtained and recordings are put online, the interpreter(s) will be paid accordingly.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated fluency in English and in target language
  • Demonstrated interpreter skills
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Flexible schedule with daytime availability
  • Prior interpreting experience in healthcare/social services
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, health reference and resources
  • Successful completion of the Interpreter Training Program is preferred.

An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.
