Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.

Position Overview:

This position entails supporting the supervisor with research, engagement, and knowledge mobilization tasks associated with ongoing research into "Welcoming Communities" and migration to remote and rural areas.

Duties:

  • The selected candidate would be required to perform research and engagement support tasks, potentially including: locating articles and existing research, compiling a research database, compiling an annotated bibliography, organizing and filing research, writing and analysis, public outreach, community engagement, and assisting in the compiling of research and policy briefs.  
  • The position may contain other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A general understanding of migration processes and migration research, and demonstrated experience in this realm, will be essential.  
  • The student must have a strong academic record with considerable experience in researching, writing and conducting analysis at a high level.  
  • Upper year undergraduate (4th year) or Masters student is preferred.  
  • Enrollment in a social science program is considered an asset.  
  • Previous research assistance work is considered an asset.  Student must have strong English language skills.  
  • Japanese language skills (written and spoken) would be considered an asset, as much of this work involves collaborating with Japanese research partners.  
  • Graphic design and formatting is considered an asset.

Condition(s) of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Students must be approved for the 2024-25 Work-Study program. Students may be eligible for the Work-Study Program if they meet all of the following criteria:
    • Currently an undergraduate or graduate student (PACE and ELP students are currently ineligible);
    • Enrolled full-time for the current Fall/Winter session (i.e. at least 18 credit hours or 12 credit hours if registered with Accessibility Services);
    • Completed 24 credit hours at an undergraduate level at the University (or equivalent);
    • Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0;
    • Have demonstrated financial need (shortage between your expenses and resources)*; and
    • A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, protected person or an international student with a valid study permit.
      *An application is incomplete if you have put zero resources. As a full-time student, you are expected to have some form of funding source.

The period of work will be from ASAP - March 31, 2025 and the estimated total hours of work will be 49 hours.
