Senior Research Assistants are normally graduate students, or University of Winnipeg undergraduate students, employed to assist in the execution and evaluation of research projects in their area of study. The positions may oversee Research Assistants in areas such as the use of proper techniques, analysis, and documentation.

Senior Research Assistants work under the general supervision or direction of more senior researchers or faculty members, and are expected to exercise judgment in prioritizing, planning and organizing their own work within defined parameters.

Position Overview:

The 57th Algonquian Conference will be an international gathering of scholars, practitioners, and community members. Participants will share research and practice relating to Algonquian languages (including Cree, Ojibwe, Oji-Cree, and in this context, Michif) and culture, including language and culture reclamation. The conference also includes special events, outings, and shared meals. The Senior Research Assistant in this position will work with the conference organizing committee in all aspects of conference organization and delivery.

The number of hours will vary per week. Work may be performed remotely or on campus. The estimated time commitment is five hours per week, with more hours at intensive planning times.

Duties:

• Coordinate conference communications, including with the conference organizing committee, participants, stakeholders, service providers, and University administration and staff
• Prepare conference work plans and schedules
• Draft funding proposals and budgets, with support from the Researcher
• Book rooms, catering, tours, vendor tables, and other aspects of the conference
• Receive and distribute conference abstracts. Draft conference program with input from conference organizing committee
• Document conference process and outcomes. Draft conference and funding reports.
• Manage and administer conference budget, including receiving and invoicing and preparing budget reports
• Provide practical support to participants leading up to and during the conference
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

• Post-secondary certificate, diploma or degree or equivalent training and experience
• Experience with fundraising/grant writing, project management, or event coordination
• Experience working with researchers, Indigenous organizations and communities
• Exceptional interpersonal skills
• Knowledge of and familiarity with a university environment (especially The University of Winnipeg) with the ability to work well with people from different disciplines
• Competence in clear, concise and tactful communication with supervisors, clients, peers and staff
• Adaptability and flexibility including the ability to manage deadline pressure, ambiguity and change

The period of work will be from December 9, 2024 - December 19, 2025, and the estimated total hours of work will be 200-350 hours.
