Senior Research Assistants are normally graduate students, or University of Winnipeg undergraduate students, employed to assist in the execution and evaluation of research projects in their area of study. The positions may oversee Research Assistants in areas such as the use of proper techniques, analysis, and documentation.
Senior Research Assistants work under the general supervision or direction of more senior researchers or faculty members, and are expected to exercise judgment in prioritizing, planning and organizing their own work within defined parameters.
Position Overview:
As the first Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS) Department in Manitoba the University of Winnipeg’s WGS Department is particularly significant. Yet its history and background has not been extensively documented. There have been many developments since 1972, when the first courses were offered at UW, to the inception of the Women’s Studies Programme, to its name change to WGS, and particulars of the history of the now Department are now in some danger of being permanently lost.
In order to gather this information before more individuals involved are no longer available we will conduct oral history interviews with faculty involved in the WS Programme’s inception as well as with those who have now or in the past held tenured or tenure track positions in the Programme and Department. A focus on faculty helps illuminate the Programme’s and Department’s intellectual, pedagogical, and institutional dimensions to foster a comprehensive understanding of its directions and impact. We will audio or video document, using audio recorders and/or Zoom or another video platform, oral history interviews with approximately 25 individuals, identified by current WGS department members and from faculty lists in UW Calendars held by the Office of the Registrar and Student Records. The resulting audio documents will be edited as necessary (for example if interviewees request that information be removed), captioned, and transcribed. Once this work is complete, all resulting documents will be deposited in the most appropriate current UW location (the UW library’s research data repository UWinnipeg Borealis or the Oral History Centre Archives). We will also prepare an article on the history of the Programme and Department, which may be presented at conferences by Greenhill, Singh, and/or the MA student Research Associate, and will be submitted to a Canadian feminist journal such as Resources for Feminist Research or Canadian Woman Studies.
Applications must include an unofficial transcript, CV and a letter of interest.
