Senior Research Assistants are normally graduate students, or University of Winnipeg undergraduate students, employed to assist in the execution and evaluation of research projects in their area of study. The positions may oversee Research Assistants in areas such as the use of proper techniques, analysis, and documentation.

Senior Research Assistants work under the general supervision or direction of more senior researchers or faculty members, and are expected to exercise judgment in prioritizing, planning and organizing their own work within defined parameters.

Position Overview:

The Teaching Indigenous Languages project seeks to document the development, design, delivery, and outcomes of the Indigenous Languages degree and certificate programs at the University of Winnipeg. The successful candidate will work with program faculty, staff, students, and community partners to complete an action research project that will record students’, faculty members’, community partners’ and others experiences in the program. The project will also document success factors and challenges experienced by those involved in the program, and evidence of the program’s outcomes. The Senior Research Assistant will aid in all components of the research project, and will help organize events and initiatives stemming from the program.

This is a hybrid position. Most work may be done either remotely or in a shared on campus office. Attendance at the University of Winnipeg for some events and meetings is required. The estimated number of hours is 20-25h/week over 12-16 weeks.

Duties:

  • Relationship building and liaison with faculty, staff, Teaching Indigenous Languages for Vitality students (future, current, and past pilot participants), and community partners involved in the Indigenous Languages Certificate programs
  • Co-development and implementation of methodology
  • Co-preparation of ethics applications
  • Setting up meetings, facilitating conversations, notetaking
  • Collecting, organizing, maintaining, analysing, and summarizing data
  • Maintaining privacy and confidentiality of all conversations and files
  • Co-writing reports, co-delivering presentations
  • Organizing events, including room bookings, booking catering, liaising with participants
  • Administrative duties including following pre-set budget, filling out and submitting forms, tracking form submission, and serving as a point of contact among different parties involved in the work.

Qualifications:

  • Certificate, Diploma, Bachelor or Master’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, community partners, and the public.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively with others while managing timelines and deadlines
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Ability to use software applications as required for communications and information processing
  • Experience with qualitative research methodologies or Indigenous research methodologies is preferred
  • Lived experience in Indigenous communities in Manitoba is preferred
  • Familiarity with University of Winnipeg programs and degree progressions is preferred
  • Project management experience is preferred

The period of work will be from December 9, 2024 - March 15, 2025, and the estimated total hours of work will be 200-320 hours.
