Estimated Range of Hours of Work: 0-12 hours per week, flexible scheduling
Appointment Dates: September 11, 2024 - August 7, 2025

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide tutoring to students, which may include explaining and demonstrating concepts and procedures, and clarifying subject areas;
  • Meet with students individually or as a group to resolve course-related problems;
  • Maintain regularly scheduled and posted times to provide consultation and feedback to students on coursework, quality of materials submitted for grading, and other similar matters;
  • Maintain records; may assist in the reproduction of tests; organize course materials; etc.
  • May assist with proctoring/invigilating tests, exams and quizzes;
  • Attend training related to the assigned duties and responsibilities;
  • Perform other related tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Normally a graduate, Honours, or an upper-level undergraduate student at the University of Winnipeg.
  • Completion of academic studies and/or a suitable combination of education and experience related to assigned duties.
  • Successful completion of required training.
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to present information clearly and professionally.
  • Ability to interact empathetically with a wide variety of students.
  • Ability to provide effective and constructive feedback.
  • Ability to exercise judgement.
  • Ability to meet specified deadlines.
  • Capable of performing the duties as assigned.

Additional Requirements:

  • Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Most tutoring is provided for first year Applied Computer Science, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Statistics courses, though there will be one position for a Biology tutor this year.
  • Applicants must have high academic standing in the courses to be tutored, generally A's and A+'s.
  • Applicants must have completed some second year courses in the discipline they hope to tutor.
  • We expect most of the tutoring to be done in-person, from the Tutoring Centre, 3G11, but there will be some limited online tutoring as well, so preference will be given to applicants with access to high-speed internet and a webcam and/or a tablet.
  • Tutoring is done in-person, in the Tutoring Centre, 3G11.
  • Preference will be given to those students capable of tutoring more than one subject.
  • Preference will be given to current University of Winnipeg students.
